The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has eliminated a $5,000 (GH₵58,000) fuel allocation proposed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the Black Stars’ team bus ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams announced this decision during a press briefing in Accra on September 2, 2025, emphasizing fiscal discipline and transparency in national team spending, as directed by President John Dramani Mahama.

The budget cut is part of a broader reduction that saw the GFA’s initial $1,239,090 budget for the Chad match trimmed to $841,290.

Key adjustments included halving player bonuses from $10,000 to $5,000, scrapping bonuses for team officials, and reducing incidental expenses from $60,000 to $20,000.

The $300,000 allocation for a chartered flight remained unchanged. Adams highlighted that the Ministry reviewed the GFA’s budget to align with Ghana’s economic realities, ensuring prudent use of taxpayer funds.

The Black Stars will face Chad in N’Djamena on September 4, 2025, before hosting Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 8. These matches are critical for Ghana’s qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ministry’s actions reflect a commitment to accountability, with Adams praising the GFA’s cooperation and players’ acceptance of revised financial arrangements.

This move follows public scrutiny over national team expenditures, with the government aiming to balance support for the Black Stars with fiscal responsibility.

The approved budget of $1,320,490 for both qualifiers represents a $732,750 reduction from the GFA’s original $2,053,240 proposal, showcasing significant savings.
